DESALINIZATION

Hydrated lime is used to neutralize acidic water in desalinization processes, taking it to a neutral pH that is suitable for drinking. The advantages of using calcium hydroxide include the limited investment required, as the facilities are small.

TREATING DRINKING WATER

Lime is the main material used to purify drinking water, dissolved or in suspension. It is used for coagulation, flocculation, neutralizing and decanting materials in suspension, lowering temporary hardness, reducing concentration of dissolved metals, disinfecting and controlling pH.

TREATING WASTEWATER AND MUDS

Wastewater contains suspended solids, dissolved colloidal organic materials, nutrients and even heavy metals.

In addition to the uses described for treating drinking water, chemical/biological plants use lime for biological oxidation, precipitation of phosphorus, separating nitrogen and stabilizing mud generated in the process.

TREATING GASES

Lime is used as a desulphurizing agent through simultaneous injection, dry injection in output gases, dry scrubbing or wet scrubbing. In the last system, which is the most commonly used, exhaust gases from combustion are scrubbed in reaction towers with large amounts of limewater to create easily separable compounds.

TREATING LEACHATES

Lime is also supplied to treat leachates, which are the liquids generated as a result of decomposing or fermenting organic materials or through percolation of contaminated materials. Lime is used to get solid, easily compactable waste that can be disposed of at a dump.

TREATING CONTAMINATED GROUND

Lime is used to treat contaminated ground and soils, to treat purines, and to purify and destroy germs and deodorize spaces. It has the following effects:

· Precipitation of heavy metals in insolubles forms.
· Extraction of hydrocarbons and volatile organic compounds.
· Regulation of pH.
